John T. Sullivan Walks The Way of St. Francis

Thursday, June 1st, 2017

Dear friends,

This morning I have begun walking from Assisi back to Rome. The early morning is great to walk with backpack and poles. However by late morning the heat is oppressive. I still have two weeks to go!

For the past twelve days I have tagged along with a group of Franciscan educators including a university president from St. Francis University in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. We were led by a Franciscan, Fr. Andre Cirino O.F.M. and Dr. Jean Francois Godet-Calogeras Ph.D, the head of the Franciscan Studies Program at St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY. I wanted to join this group because I know very little about the 13th century saints: St. Francis and Saint Clare. Being a Californian, I know that many of our cities have connections to the founding of the missions by St. Junipers Serra, a Franciscan. The retreat/pilgrimage started in Rome and ended in a intense five-day visit to Assisi and surrounding areas.

I now have a better understanding of the context of my walk. My Italian is even getting better! Here are some of the pictures I wanted to share with you.

Ciao,

John T. Sullivan
