Families Together, A Promise Kept

Wednesday, August 1st, 2018

This past week we joined together as a community to support two working homeless families. Led by our pastor, fr. Dan, we opened the doors of our facility and welcomed two beautiful families that are in the process of getting back on their feet.

I was overwhelmed by the outpouring of spiritual and financial support as well as the hard hours of serving meals, cleaning, running around with kids and staying overnight, sleeping on cots in classrooms. You, our beloved parishioners, are once again what makes OLMC such a special place to be and, if I can be so bold, I think our guests felt that way too.

We will never know the impact we have on other people’s lives, but I know that for one week, two families, under nearly unbearable circumstances, were held together. The promise that “all are welcome at OLMC,” no matter what, was kept.

I wasn’t surprised. I was particularly touched to see so many teens and young children serving alongside their parents. Catholic service is truly a family affair at OLMC! A favorite moment from the week—our guests and young parishioners created a play on stage, even one of our guests’ moms jumped in and went on stage! What a journey it has been to get to this moment, not to mention what that journey must have been for our guests.

I am also profoundly proud of our staff and Church leadership. I know I may border on the condescending (and I don’t mean to!), but I am so incredibly honored to work with this group of amazing Academy faculty and Church staff. As soon as we began this project, fr. Dan took the first shift, Deacon Anthony right behind him, and bags of donations from Academy teachers and Facilities staff began to litter my office. Personal checks and gift cards from secretaries and Parish Advisory Board members also appeared on my desk.

The parishioners’ sweat, prayers and laughs made it happen. All for Christ! It was a moving, exhausting and really fun week at OLMC.  Thank you, thank you, and thank you again.

Until the next adventure!

I’ll be seeing you,

Elliot Guerra
