This Week’s Gospel Message

Thursday, August 30th, 2018

This week’s Gospel message for Sunday, September 2nd is from Mark 7:1-8,14-15,21-23.

“[Jesus] responded, ‘Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts. You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition.’”

“Jesus sees through the Pharisees and the scribes at once, calling them out as hypocrites because they follow the letter of the law and not the spirit. It is easy to judge based on the letter of the law; it takes time and wisdom to judge on the spirit of the law. When we are quick to judgment, we may be making the same error the Pharisees do.”
