This Week’s Gospel Message for Sunday, September 16th

“And [Jesus] asked [his disciples], ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Peter said to him in reply, ‘You are the Christ.’ … He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, ‘Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.’”Mark 8:27-35

“Peter had just identified Jesus as the Christ (the Messiah, in Hebrew). However, Jesus knows that he is not the kind of Messiah that everyone expects, one who would lead the people to victory over the Roman government. Instead, he is the Messiah that Isaiah describes in the first reading. He is the one who will suffer on behalf of the people. He will be the one who will need to resist the temptation to let this cup pass.”
