Meet the Team

Wednesday, September 26th, 2018

Medical Mission team members are being interviewed for our parish bulletin. This week we feature Dr. John Owens for a look at how he is involved in OLMC’s first Medical Mission.

Why did you choose to be part of the Medical Mission team to Peru?

The desire to serve as part of a medical mission has always been there, but it was difficult to commit time away from work and family. When my youngest left for college, I began exploring options when this opportunity availed itself. What better way to serve than with your own parish family!

How are you helping the team prepare?

As a physician, I will be involved in direct patient care. Preparation requires tremendous attention to detail. We try to anticipate the medical needs of the community we will serve as well as all of the equipment we will need to set up a mobile clinic. We petitioned organizations for donations of medications and medical supplies. As a team, we packaged and shipped them.

What would you say to parishioners who perhaps want to join a ministry but are a little hesitant?

Just do it! Many I have talked to express an interest in being involved but feel they have little to offer since they may have little experience in healthcare. The reality is that there are lots of needs, ranging from planning to logistics to labor, translators, and set up – to name but a few.

What are some of the challenges of preparing for a trip like this?

There are challenges related to every part of trip preparation. Nonetheless, I did not anticipate the amount of government oversight there would be. Thankfully, our trip leaders have been great with communication and keeping us on our timetable.

Is there a specific feeling, memory or story you want to share about the team’s preparation?

The hallmark of our meetings has been a tremendous feeling of camaraderie and cooperation. While everyone is assigned a primary role, they are always willing to offer their time and expertise wherever it is needed. It gives one confidence that this team can meet the medical and spiritual needs of any community.
