This Week’s Gospel Message

Wednesday, July 17th, 2019

This Week’s Gospel Message for Sunday, July 21st is from Luke 10:38-42

“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.”

“Jesus comes to Martha and Mary as a guest. . .though they know who he is from the start. Martha shows love of neighbor in the way that she serves their guest. Mary shows love of God in the way that she sat with Jesus and listened to every word he spoke. In the way that they treat the guest in their home, they do everything the Lord asks of us.”

DAILY READINGS FOR THE WEEK

Monday Song 3:1-4b; John 20:1-2, 11-18

Saint Mary Magdalene (Feast) – “With some other women, Mary traveled with Jesus and the apostles during his ministry. Her great love for Jesus was expressed when she faithfully stood near the cross after the other disciples fled. She. . .became the first witness to the resurrection. She became the ‘Apostle to the Apostles’ when she announced this mystery to them.” Source: Living With Christ, July 2019

Tuesday Exod 14:21—15:1; Matt 12:46-50

Wednesday Exod 16:1-5, 9-15; Matt 13:1-9

Thursday 2 Cor 4:7-15; Matt 20:20-28

Saint James, Apostle (Feast) – “James, son of Zebedee, was a fisherman with his brother John. The brothers were close to the Lord, being present at the raising of Jairus’s daughter, at the transfiguration, and in the Garden of Gethsemane. He is known as James the Greater, to distinguish him from the other apostle of the same name. He is a patron saint of Spain and of pilgrims.” Source: Living With Christ, July 2019

Friday Exod 20:1-17; Matt 13:18-23

Saints Joachim and Anne, Parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Memorial) – “The gospels tell us nothing about Mary’s parents, not even their names. What we know from Christian tradition is found in non-scriptural writings such as the Protogospel of James. Devotion to St. Anne existed in sixth-century Constantinople and in eighth-century Rome. By the sixteenth century this feast day was universal. Joachim has been honored in the East from the earliest days, but in the West only since the sixteenth century. May we imitate their example as loving parents and do all we can so that children might flourish as Mary did.” Source: Living With Christ, July 2019
