This Week’s Gospel Message

Thursday, October 31st, 2019

This Week’s Gospel Message for Sunday, November 3rd is from Luke 19:1-10.

“But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, ‘Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘Today salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost.’”

“Jesus gives [Zacchaeus] ‘space for repentance’ and Zacchaeus, full of remorse, takes that space. He returns to God with the same eagerness with which he scampered up the tree, promising to pay back every dishonest penny four times over. His repentance can be a model for us all.” Source:  Pastoral Patterns, Autumn 2019

DAILY READINGS FOR THE WEEK

Monday Rom 11:29-36; Luke 14:12-14

Saint Charles Borromeo, Bishop (Memorial) – “As archbishop, his ascetic life and reform of his diocese made him one of the leading figures in the Catholic reformation of the Church after the Council of Trent. May we learn from him that ‘if we wish to make any progress in the service of God, we must begin every day of our life with new eagerness.’” Source: Living With Christ, November 2019

Saturday Ezek 47:1-2, 8-9, 12; 1 Cor 3:9c-11, 16-17;  John 2:13-22

The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica (Feast) – “The cathedral church of Rome (the pope’s local parish as bishop of Rome) was dedicated by Pope Sylvester I in 324. Originally called the Most Holy Savior, it is called St. John Lateran because it was built on property donated by the Laterani family and its baptistry is named after St. John. May we celebrate our unity today with this church that is ‘the mother and head of all churches of the city and of the world.’” Source: Living With Christ, November 2019
