This Week’s Gospel Message

Wednesday, December 4th, 2019

This Week’s Gospel Message for Sunday, December 8th is from Matthew 3:1-12.

“John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the desert of Judea and saying, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!’. . . When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, ‘You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance.’”

“John the Baptist does not invoke idyllic scenes when speaking to the Pharisees and Sadducees, instead accusing them of insincerity and presumption. He called them to repentance, demanding that they ‘produce good fruit as evidence’ (Matthew 3:8). Repentance means nothing if we do nothing. We are called to bear fruit—in our workplaces, our communities, and our world.” Source:  Pastoral Patterns, Winter 2019-2020
