This Week’s Gospel Message

Wednesday, January 29th, 2020

This Week’s Gospel Message for Sunday, February 2nd is from Luke 2:22-40.

“When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, Mary and Joseph took Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord . . . When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom, and the favor of God was upon him.”

“It is Jesus’ final visit to Jerusalem that we remember, when he was welcomed by cheering onlookers, celebrated the Last Supper, was arrested, sentenced, and put to death. Today we hear of his first visit to Jerusalem. Jesus, who was sent to fulfill the law and the prophets, is brought to the temple as Mary’s firstborn son to fulfill the law and is recognized by the prophets Simeon and Anna as the Messiah. After Anna’s encounter with the Lord, she spoke to ‘all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.’” Source:   Pastoral Patterns, Winter 2019-2020
