Sacred Music Series

Thursday, June 18th, 2020

In a new summer series, OLMC music director and music professor, Ms. Andrea Covais explores the rich tradition of sacred music. Each week we will feature a new song that will be sung during that weekend’s Masses at communion. We hope these short pieces enrich and deepen your spiritual journey during these times.

Ms. Andrea Covais, OLMC Music Director

“The Lord’s Prayer”, written in 1935 by Alfred Hay Malotte (1895-1964) is one of the most well known settings of the “Our Father” prayer to music. Malotte was an American composer, pianist, organist and educator who wrote many types of music including film scores, ballets, and songs both sacred and secular.

In this song, one can hear the singer call in prayer to God our eternal Father and forge the relationship of Father and child, reflective of our everyday vulnerability and need for God. This was the first prayer that Christ taught his disciples. (Luke 11: 1-4)

On this Father’s Day weekend, let us think about our relationship and the gift of not only our Earthly fathers and grandfathers, but the gift of our relationship with our God, the Heavenly Father of all.

Text:
Our Father, which art in Heaven
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done
On Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the Kingdom, and the power and the glory forever.
Amen
