Sacred Music Series

Thursday, July 2nd, 2020

In a new summer series, OLMC music director and music professor, Ms. Andrea Covais explores the rich tradition of sacred music. Each week we will feature a new song that will be sung during that weekend’s Masses at communion. We hope these short pieces enrich and deepen your spiritual journey during these times.

Ms. Andrea Covais, OLMC Music Director

This weekend, in honor of the rich African American contribution to our country’s great musical history, I will sing a traditional spiritual called “My Lord, What a Morning”, arranged by Mark Hayes. Though many arrangements exist for this song, Hayes created an arrangement for voice and piano that is lush and based on elements of improvisation, coming from the roots of jazz and ragtime, but with a thickness found in Romantic art song and a full equal partnership between voice and accompaniment.

Spirituals come from an oral tradition, passed from one generation to another and convey deep faith and passion. They allow us to sing in a raw way from our souls, giving voice to a full range of emotions. It is my hope you will be moved and spiritually nourished by this incredible music.

Text:
My Lord, what a mornin’ when the stars begin to fall.
Done quit all my worldly ways, joined that heavenly band.
My Lord, what a mornin’ when the stars begin to fall.
