Hebrew Tabernacle is a Reform congregation located on the corner of West 185th Street and Fort Washington Avenue in Upper Washington Heights. Many German Jewish refugees found a new home at the Hebrew Tabernacle Congregation after the Holocaust. A ceremony marking the anniversary of Kristallnacht is an important annual observance for its membership.

*Kristallnacht, the “Night of Broken Glass,” was an organized mass riot by Nazi mobs against the Jewish community of Germany that took place on November 9 and 10, 1938.  Nazis in Germany torched synagogues, vandalized Jewish homes, schools and businesses.   Close to 100 Jews were killed and over 30,000 arrested and sent to concentration camps.  Kristallnacht is often considered the beginning of the Holocaust.
