“Sister Moon”

Wednesday, December 30th, 2020

Pope Francis designated May 24, 2020 through May 24, 2021 as Laudato Sí Year to commemorate the fifth anniversary of his landmark encyclical on the care for our common home. The following is an excerpt from Laudato Sí and a reflection provided by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia.

Pope Francis’s Laudato Sí #92: Peace, justice and the preservation of creation are three absolutely interconnected themes, which cannot be separated and treated individually without once again falling into reductionism. Everything is related, and we human beings are united as brothers and sisters on a wonderful pilgrimage, woven together by the love God has for each of his creatures and which also unites us in fond affection with Brother Sun, Sister Moon, Brother River and Mother Earth.

Reflection: This excerpt invites us to befriend not only members of the human species, but other living as well as non-living beings – to feel such a kinship with them that we refer to them with family names. Try using these terms of affection with the creatures you meet this week in tribute to St. Francis of Assisi. Notice what this feels like to do this.
