This Week’s Gospel Message

Thursday, January 7th, 2021

This Week’s Gospel message for Sunday, January 10th is from Mark 1:7-11.

“It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, ‘You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.’”

“When Jesus was baptized, the heavens were torn open and the Holy Spirit descended upon him. When we were baptized, the heavens didn’t appear to have been torn open. Yet we received the Holy Spirit. There must have been some tear between the heavens and the earth. The Holy Spirit, driving within us, flowing among us, transforms us, tearing our new selves from our old selves. Our baptized selves have the divine within. May God be well pleased in us.” Source: Pastoral Patterns, Winter 2020-2021
