This Week’s Gospel Message

Wednesday, October 5th, 2022

This week’s Gospel message for Sunday, October 9th is from Luke 17:11-19.

“As Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem, he traveled through Samaria and Galilee. As he was entering a village, ten lepers met him. They stood at a distance from him and raised their voices, saying, ‘Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!’ And when he saw them, he said, ‘Go show yourselves to the priests.’ As they were going they were cleansed. And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice…He was a Samaritan. Jesus said in reply…‘Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?’ Then he said to him, ‘Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.’”

“Today we hear Jesus tell the leper who returned to give thanks, ‘Your faith has saved you.’ Because of their leprosy, these ten lepers had to be ‘rooted’ outside the village, far from the synagogue, unable to worship communally. The faith of the ten lepers, who called Jesus ‘Master,’ was enough to lead to their physical healing—at least as dramatic as uprooting a tree—but the spontaneous gratitude of the Samaritan leper, who prostrated himself to Jesus and thanked him, has brought him salvation, effectively replanting him not only back in the community, but also in the kingdom of God.” SOURCE: Pastoral Patterns, Autumn 2022
