In 1873 a group of Catholic families petitioned the Bishop to start a Catholic parish in Tenafly. On July 5, 1873 the Parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was formally organized. The first mass was celebrated in a wooden barn. Soon the families bought a piece of land and built a humble wooden chapel. In 1878 the Bishop entrusted the parish to the Carmelite Fathers. The Carmelites have served at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Tenafly ever since. Our parish community invites you come and worship the Lord with us. Our beautiful church is equipped with an elevator and ramp to make it barrier-free for your convenience. We also have recently installed a state-of-the-art audio system. Mass is celebrated daily. The challenge is ever before us to look within ourselves and re-examine our directions and efforts in answering the Christian call to build the Kingdom of God. Our hope is to be open and responsive to all people and their needs. |
