Lead in Love

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2016

This Sunday’s Gospel is filled with imagery concerning watchfulness using the images of masters, servants, and thieves. “Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant,” the Lord reminds us. I have felt so incredibly blessed for my time at OLMC and while I’m excited to work for hundreds of kids and parishioners, I also am humbled by the deep responsibility of their care. Jesus’ lesson to us seems to be given to those who are not still searching for God, but those who have found Him. Jesus is telling all of us, the faithful, don’t rest on your laurels, stay focused on the purpose of your mission, which is to love God and others.

We’ve all heard the phrase “knowledge is power” and certainly that’s true when discussing education, but unfortunately in our families and workspaces we think knowledge of others in the form of gossip is power.  It isn’t; it is responsibility. Jesus is answering Peter’s question when he asks, “Lord, is this parable meant for us?” Yes, he is telling us! Knowledge is responsibility. If we know people are hurting or in need, then we must be vigilant to their needs as the Lord makes forcibly clear: “Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.” The Lord is challenging us, telling us, that love is a responsibility. Anyone in a position of power is in an office of service to others. To be a Christian is to be a leader in love, a server to those around him or her. That’s important to remember in an election season. The president works for you, the Pope works for you, the staff of Our Lady of Mount Carmel works for you!  Let us remain vigilant not to abuse the gift of love.

I’ll be seeing you,

Elliot
