This Week’s Gospel Message

Thursday, May 2nd, 2019

This Week’s Gospel Message for Sunday, May 5th is from John 21:1-19.

“When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?’ Simon Peter answered him, ‘Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my lambs.’ He then said to Simon Peter a second time, ‘Simon, son of John, do you love me?’ Simon Peter answered him, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Tend my sheep.’ Jesus said to him the third time, ‘Simon, son of John, do you love me?’ . . . ‘Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep.’”

“Earlier in John’s Gospel, Jesus portrays himself as the Good Shepherd, willing to lay down his life for his sheep. Here in the final chapter of his Gospel, Jesus tells Peter that he will now be the one to shepherd his flock. Peter will need to tend and feed his sheep. Also like Jesus, Peter will end up sacrificing his life for his sheep.”
