The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia Invite You to Celebrate Laudato Sí Year

Pope Francis designated May 24, 2020 through May 24, 2021 as Laudato Sí Year to commemorate the fifth anniversary of his landmark encyclical on the care for our common home. The Season of Creation (September 1–October 4) seems to be an appropriate time to initiate this opportunity for weekly reflection on excerpts from Laudato Sí.

Pope Francis’s Laudato Sí #21: Pollution, waste and the throwaway culture. Each year hundreds of millions of tons of waste are generated, much of it non-biodegradable, highly toxic and radioactive, from homes and businesses, from construction and demolition sites, from clinical, electronic and industrial sources. The earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth.

Reflection: This week notice how you participate in the “throwaway” culture. What paper and plastic items do you use once and throw away? Take a walk in your neighborhood on trash day. Remind yourself that most of this trash will end up in a landfill somewhere. There is no “away” to throw anything.
