This Week’s Gospel Message

This Week’s Gospel Message for Sunday, October 4th  is from Matthew 21:33-43

“Jesus said to [the chief priests], ‘Did you never read in the Scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes? Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit.’”

“In the first parable from Isaiah, we hear a condensed history of the Chosen People. Like Eden, this vineyard is tended lovingly by God, its choicest vines fertile, full of life. But like Eden, what it yielded was from outside the goodness of creation. The second parable, told by Jesus to the chief priests, uses the same setting, so no doubt the chief priests recalled the passage from Isaiah as Jesus told the new story. They are quick to judge the greedy, envious tenants, and rightly so, but they fail to make the connection of their role in the parable. So too may we. When do we persist on putting our own self-interest before the landowner’s/my friend’s/God’s?” Source: Pastoral Patterns, Autumn 2020

Sunday, October 4th is the memorial of Saint Francis of Assisi. “Francis inspired thousands to lead lives of poverty, simplicity, and humble service, delighting in creation and consumed with love for Christ.”
