Climate and Social Justice

Thursday, October 22nd, 2020

Pope Francis designated May 24, 2020 through May 24, 2021 as Laudato Sí Year to commemorate the fifth anniversary of his landmark encyclical on the care for our common home. The following is an excerpt from Laudato Sí and a reflection provided by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia.

Pope Francis’s Laudato Sí #53, 54: The problem is that we still lack the culture needed to confront this crisis of climate change. We lack leadership capable of striking out on new paths and meeting the needs of the present with concern for all and without prejudice towards coming generations. The failure of global summits on the environment make it plain that our politics are subject to technology and finance. There are too many special interests, and economic interests easily end up trumping the common good and manipulating information so that their own plans will not be affected.

Reflection: Do a Google search to learn where your local and state leaders stand on environmental issues. How do the presidential candidates’ positions align with the Catholic Social Teaching on the environment that is expressed in Laudato Sí?
