Our Common Origin

Thursday, February 18th, 2021

Pope Francis designated May 24, 2020 through May 24, 2021 as Laudato Si’ Year to commemorate the fifth anniversary of his landmark encyclical on the care for our common home. The following is an excerpt from Laudato Si’ and a reflection provided by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia.

Pope Francis’s Laudato Si’ #202: Many things have to change course, but it is we human beings above all who need to change. We lack an awareness of our common origin, of our mutual belonging, and of a future to be shared with everyone. This basic awareness would enable the development of new convictions, attitudes and forms of life. A great cultural, spiritual and educational challenge stands before us, and it will demand that we set out on the long path of renewal.

Reflection: How does your awareness of our common origin and our mutual belonging affect the way you live your life?

“It is our profound conviction

that the future of the human family

depends also on how we safeguard—

both prudently and compassionately,

with justice and fairness—

the gift of creation that our Creator

has entrusted to us.”

—Pope Francis
