Thanking Creation

Thursday, April 22nd, 2021

Pope Francis designated May 24, 2020 through May 24, 2021 as Laudato Si’ Year to commemorate the fifth anniversary of his landmark encyclical on the care for our common home. The following is an excerpt from Laudato Si’ and a reflection provided by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia.

Pope Francis’s Laudato Si’ #220: This ecological conversion calls for a number of attitudes which together foster a spirit of generous care, full of tenderness. First, it entails gratitude and gratuitousness, a recognition that the world is God’s loving gift, and that we are called quietly to imitate his generosity in self-sacrifice and good works. It also entails a loving awareness that we are not disconnected from the rest of creatures but joined in a splendid universal communion. By developing our individual, God-given capacities, an ecological conversion can inspire us to greater creativity and enthusiasm in resolving the world’s problems and in offering ourselves to God.

Reflection: Each night before you go to bed pause to recall the gifts of the day and give thanks to God for them. Consider keeping a notepad by your bed and writing down the gifts of each day.

“Creation is a gift, it is the marvelous gift  that God has given us, so that we will take care of it and harness it for the benefit of all, always with great respect and gratitude.”

—Pope Francis
