Catechetical Sunday

Blessings to our catechists!

Thank you for your commitment to be witnesses to the Gospel

and ministers of God’s truth.

This Sunday is Catechetical Sunday. There will be a special blessing at the 10 AM Mass this weekend for all those who serve in our catechetical ministries. This Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This Sunday is an opportunity for all of us to rededicate ourselves to this mission as a community of faith.

Why do we celebrate Catechetical Sunday?

In 1935, the Vatican published On the Better Care and Promotion of Catechetical Education, a document that asks every country to acknowledge the importance of the Church’s teaching ministry and to honor those who serve the Christian community as catechists. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has designated the third Sunday in September as Catechetical Sunday.

The catechetical theme for this year is “Say the Word and My Soul Shall Be Healed.” These words that we pray at Mass have the power to remind us of, to open our eyes to, the healing that Jesus offers us in the Eucharist.
