This Week’s Gospel Message

Wednesday, December 29th, 2021

This week’s Gospel message for Sunday, January 2nd is from Matthew 2:1-12.

“When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, ‘Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage’ . . . They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage.”

“The magi relied on both science and faith to guide them to the Lord. They observed the night sky and studied the movement of the stars and planets, drawing conclusions from the travels of these heavenly bodies. Without knowing what this remarkable star was, they realized its importance and journeyed all the way to Jerusalem. But, still a few miles from their destination, they needed guidance from the chief priests and the scribes to direct them to Bethlehem. By science or faith alone, they did not know enough; together, they found the Lord.” SOURCE: Pastoral Patterns, Winter 2021-2022
