This Week’s Gospel Message

Thursday, June 2nd, 2022

This week’s Gospel message for Sunday, June 5th is from John 14:15-16, 23b-26.

“Jesus said to his disciples: ‘If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always. Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him. Those who do not love me do not keep my words; yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the Father who sent me. I have told you this while I am with you. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.’”

“During the entire period before the birth of Christ, God was remote, only speaking to certain people like Moses and the prophets. Everyone else just saw clouds and heard thunder. Even when Jesus spoke of the Spirit, whom he portrayed as living water flowing within us, the Holy Spirit was not yet here. But now, with the Holy Spirit dwelling within us, we are blessed with the Spirit’s intimate presence, guiding us, animating us, flowing out of us as we live out our faith. We cannot see the Holy Spirit, but we can feel effects: a gentle nudge to reach out to someone in need when we’re reluctant to do so or an overpowering urge to turn our lives around.” SOURCE: Pastoral Patterns, Summer 2022
