This Week’s Gospel Message

Thursday, August 18th, 2022

This week’s Gospel message for Sunday, August 21st is from Luke 13:22-30.

“Jesus passed through towns and villages, teaching as he went and making his way to Jerusalem. Someone asked him, ‘Lord, will only a few people be saved?’ He answered them, ‘Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough.’”

“It is revealing that the same Jesus who warned us about the narrow gate opened his arms wide on the cross to redeem the world. It is the wideness of God’s mercy, not our ability to stick to the straight and narrow, that determines whether we end up reclining at table in God’s kingdom. By all means, we should strive to be a disciple, to aim for that narrow gate. We are called to focus our attention, our discipleship, on what is truly important, discarding whatever distracts us from that focus, that prevents us from concentrating on striving toward the kingdom. But we must always recognize that we are not the ones in charge.” SOURCE: Pastoral Patterns, Autumn 2022

DAILY READINGS FOR THE WEEK

 Monday 2 Thessalonians 1:1-5, 11-12; Matthew 23:13-22

The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Memorial) – In 1954, Pius XII instituted this memorial ‘so that all may clearly recognize and more zealously venerate the kind and maternal rule of the Mother of God.’ It is celebrated on the octave of the feast of the Assumption.

Tuesday 2 Thessalonians 2:1-3a, 14-17; Matthew 23:23-26

Wednesday Revelation 21:9b-14; John 1:45-51

Saint Bartholomew, Apostle (Feast) – Matthew, Mark, Luke, and Acts count him as one of the twelve apostles, associating his name with Philip. But John’s gospel links the name Nathanael with Philip and never mentions Bartholomew. What is certain is that Bartholomew left everything to follow Jesus.

Thursday 1 Corinthians 1:1-9; Matthew 24:42-51

Friday 1 Corinthians 1:17-25; Matthew 25:1-13

Saturday 1 Corinthians 1:26-31; Matthew 25:14-30

Saint Monica (Memorial) – Saint Monica was born a Christian in North Africa. Through her example, her husband, Patricius, became a Christian. She prayed for the conversion of her son, Augustine. SOURCE: Living With Christ, August 2022
