This Week’s Gospel Message

Thursday, January 12th, 2023

This week’s Gospel message for Sunday, January 15th is from John 1:29-34.

“John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. He is the one of whom I said, “A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.” I did not know him, but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known to Israel.’ John testified further, saying, ‘I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from heaven and remain upon him. I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, “On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.” Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.’”

Reflection: “Seven times in the first chapter of his Gospel John uses a form of the word testify to describe what John the Baptist has come to do. To be a Christian is to be called to testify to the truth we know in the Lord.” SOURCE: Pastoral Patterns, Winter 2022-2023

DAILY READINGS FOR THE WEEK

Monday Hebrews 5:1-10; Mark 2:18-22

Tuesday Hebrews 6:10-20; Mark 2:23-28

Saint Anthony, Abbot (Memorial) – “Born into a wealthy Egyptian family, Anthony gave away his inheritance and became a hermit. He was well known for his holiness, wisdom, and asceticism. After years of solitude, he gathered those who had followed him into the first monastic community. He left his solitude only to go to Alexandria to encourage those being persecuted and to help Bishop Athanasius counteract Arianism.”

Wednesday Hebrews 7:1-3, 15-17; Mark 3:1-6

Thursday Hebrews 7:25—8:6; Mark 3:7-12

Friday Hebrews 8:6-13; Mark 3:13-19

Saturday Hebrews 9:2-3, 11-14; Mark 3:20-21

Saint Agnes, Virgin and Martyr (Memorial) – “Agnes was one of the most popular early Roman martyrs, and her feast has been celebrated on this day since the fourth century. Although little is known about her, we do know that she was martyred at a young age during a Roman persecution. Because of the connection of her name to the Latin word for lamb (agnus), she is often pictured with a lamb, which is also a reminder of her sacrifice and innocence.” SOURCE: Living With Christ, January 2023
