This Week’s Gospel Message

Thursday, January 18th, 2024

This week’s Gospel message for Sunday, January 21st is from Mark 1:14-20.

As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, [Jesus] saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen. Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Then they abandoned their nets and followed him. He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They too were in a boat mending their nets. Then he called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him.

Reflection

“Note that Jesus did not tell the pairs of brothers that they had to study him for a good long time and pass a test before they could go out and fish for more disciples. He told them that all they had to do was follow and he would make them fishers of others. We need not be nervous about first becoming qualified enough to reach out to others. As long as we sincerely follow him, we can invite others to follow as well.” SOURCE: Pastoral Patterns, Winter 2023-2024
