Our Lady of Mount Carmel celebrated its first mass in a wooden barn in 1873 when a Catholic presence in Tenafly was just beginning. The church has been home to over 150 years of life affirming moments: weddings, christenings, funerals, and even more everyday memories for generations.
As our parish has grown and blossomed into the strong and vibrant community we enjoy today, our place of worship has changed significantly. We recently completed the greatest renovation our church has seen to ensure that the parish will continue to thrive and be ready to serve the many generations who are still to come.
The entire parish made sacrifices while we lived through this period and many past and current congregation members made tremendous donations of time and money to make this renovation possible.
The word “church” is a translation of the Greek word ekklesia, which is defined as “an assembly” or “gathering”. The root meaning of church is not that of a building, but of a people. We welcome back all of our current parishioners and those who are in search of a community of worship, as we continue to grow as a people of God.
